Peranakan culture shares great nostalgia infusing beauty with traditional significance that is so unique to Southeast Asian culture.

Peranakan community is unique to Southeast Asia, the history and culture of Peranakan dates back to the 16th century of marriages that took place between mostly “Hokkiens” Fujian China immigrants and non-Muslim woman of Malacca (Lim 2003).



Bats are among the representations of good fortune due to similarity in Chinese pronunciation. Bats are common shape on the panels or porcelain wall prints in Peranakan home culture to represents the harbinger of “Arrival of Good Fortune” (Knapp 2013).



Colorful symbols of peony flowers and mythical phoenix are representation of wealth, bliss and peace.


Some of the famous Peranakans being Mr Tan Tock Seng the merchant and philanthropist, Mr Gan Eng Seng whom established the now “Gan Eng Seng Secondary School”.
