Put Your Imagination to Work

Why Teak Wood furniture is expensive?

When one thinks about high priced furniture, Teak wood often comes into mind.

The origins of Teak are mainly from Ceylon, India, Burma, Thailand and Indonesia (Ahuja 1992). Indonesian teak is known to be a very slow growing plant that is difficult to cultivate, with an average of 20 years (Tan 2008).

Indonesia is one of biggest producer with the term “Jati” for teak wood and upon oiled, it has the tendency to darken slightly to a distinctive yellowish or dark brown colour with its natural straight and slightly wavy grain lines (Rich 1970).

Some teak wood exhibits rare dramatic curly round grains called “eyes”, it happened due to internal stresses and natural compression within the tree thus produces an “imperfection” (Zobel and Jett 1995), however it could also be viewed as unique wood grain texture.

Due to over forestry, teak plantation are now under conservation thus it propel teak wood’s value. Teak has the reputation of longevity, coupled with attractive natural wood grains and possesses an oily element that repels insects.

All these characteristics has given teak wood the element of a robust material, built as a lasting furniture that will be suitable for most living conditions.
